Oracle on Pillar implementation The boxes are in - we are still waiting for the rack enclosure. Apparently Pillar wants to make this a showcase implementation so they asked us to use their rack which we got at cost.

Well today we set up our Pillar system, sort of ... Brocade switches did not come with a rack mount kit so Pillar's professional services consultant suggested we wait hooking everything up - good decision as you really don't want to be moving stuff around when all fiber optic wiring is connected - it's pretty fragile. We did get a chance to play around with the administrative console, created couple of LUNs, ran Snap LUN, etc.. Of course it's all just playing around until we get a host hooked up and start really burning this baby in. Anyhow here are some pictures of the whole rig as it stands today:

We've gone a bit further in our Oracle on Pillar implementation so I thought I'll give you an update: Our Pillar rack is fully configured now - Brocade switch rack-mount kits came in so we had Pillar professional services back to complete the installation. They did a great job - I cannot say enough good things about how professional the whole team was starting from pre-sales and continuing through the sale, implementation and post implementation follow-ups. I highly recommend using their professional services to correctly setup the system - it's really worth it. What we learned from them in 2 days is worth years of trial and error especially if you haven't had much experience with SAN. Now we are into our testing phase which began with putting a small database on Pillar - here's the writeup: Pillar AXIOM 500 - Creating LUNs for an Oracle Database

Today, I did some research on how to use Pillar's CLI - command line utility. I have to say that it was a bit of a learning curve to get this going as I am not used to this type of CLI interface. What I am used to is starting a CLI, going into it's shell and typing away getting responses. With pdscli it's all backwards for me - you've got to get a session id save it into a config file, then call CLI using this config file passing requests in a form of param=value pairs. There's also a way to write your scripts but I didn't get a chance to try it out yet. Anyhow here's the writeup: Pillar Axiom CLI tutorial - axiomclu pdscli

I was able to run a small redundancy test to see what it would take to bring down our Solaris->Pillar setup - here's the writeup: Solaris Host to Pillar redundancy test using ORACLE Database
